Robert John Alter

October 10, 1938 — October 26, 2024

Coal Township

Robert John Alter, 86, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, at Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Coal Township, PA. Robert, “Bob” was born in Shamokin, PA to John H. Alter and Mary (Przybyszewskie) Sebeskie Alter on October 10, 1938.

Bob was a kind man of deep faith and great devotion to his Catholic Church. He was exceptionally charitable in helping anyone in need, especially visiting and helping the sick and elderly. With thoughtfulness, he always ended his conversations with a prayer of hope and thanksgiving for everyone.

Bob walked everywhere in Shamokin and met, talked to and knew so many residents. Everyone was a friend or acquaintance. He will be remembered forever for his friendliness and for his loving and perfect care of his mother in her final years. He prepared special meals for her and took her for a walk outdoors in her wheelchair each day. Also, always giving, he was a repeat blood donor and acknowledged by the Red Cross for his continued blood donations over the years.

As a young man, Bob was employed by Nash’s Bakery in Shamokin and the family loved when he brought home a treat of their delicious “LongJohn” doughnuts. He later worked at Skytop Lodge Resort in the Pocono Mountains for many years until he came home to care for his ageing mother. The highlights of his life were his pilgrimages with his sisters to various religious shrines both Internationally and in the United States, and he loved when he had the opportunity to fly in the cockpit with his pilot brother-in-law, Henry Melich.

Bob, one of eight children, is survived by two brothers, William (Jane Anne) and Thomas (Susan) in New Jersey; and two sisters, Patricia Czyzio Murphy (Patrick) and JoAnne Melich in Florida. Also surviving Bob are his nephew, Michael LaCrosse (Gloria) in Shamokin, who was like a brother to him, as well as eight other nieces and nephews, eleven grandnieces, and grandnephews, and one great grandniece.

He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, John; two sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) LaCrosse, and Eleanor Campbell; one nephew, Charles LaCrosse, and four brothers-in-law, Bruno LaCrosse, Albert Campbell, John Czyzio and Henry Melich. He is also predeceased by the love of his life, Nancy Eveland.

Bob is leaving a legacy of kindness and giving.  In lieu of flowers, please consider an act of kindness in Bob’s name to someone in need.
