Mary Welker

December 17, 1923 — December 17, 2020

Kulpmont

Kulpmont – Mary Welker, 97, of Serenity Gardens, formerly of Shamokin, went to be with her Lord Thursday, December 17, 2020 on her birthday at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.

Born in Shamokin on December 17, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Calvin and Rebecca (Campbell) Welker. She was the youngest of 11 children, her mother passed away at a young age and she was raised by her sisters, Sue and Nancy, who she always talked about.  Mary graduated Shamokin High School in 1943.
Mary worked at Shroyers Dress Factory. She was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ. She loved to go to the movies with her sister and she loved her family especially her big brother Ned, who would come to visit her and bring her candy which she would take back to her room, put away to never be seen again. Mary was an avid Bible study participant offering much to the class. She was always laughing, sharing stories with everyone, was an avid bingo player and was always up for a ride to go wherever. Mary truly loved her Serenity Gardens family, made up of her dear friends, and the caring staff, who treated her as if she was their grandmother. She always had everyone’s interest at heart and was always smiling.

Mary is survived by a sister, Jane Goguts of Coal Township; a sister-in-law, Shirley Welker; niece, Karen DeFrancesco of Mount Carmel; frequent visitor and niece, Caroline Weaver; and Mary’s very special friend, Diane Dallazia, who took Mary under her wing and assisted her into smoothly transitioning into Serenity Gardens and enjoying her time there; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by four sisters, Goldie Thomas, Susan Welker, Nancy Welker, and Jane Goguts; and six brothers, Ned Welker, Robert Welker, Joseph Welker, Atwood Welker, William Welker, and Louis Welker.

Heaven will be waiting with open arms for Mary and the world is a better place because she was in it. She will be greatly missed.
