Helen Jane Murphy

SHAMOKIN - Helen Jane Murphy, 95, formerly of 226 E. Dewart St., went home to be with the Lord and her parents, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Serenity Gardens, Kulpmont. She was a resident a year Dec. 9, 2020.

She was born March 26, 1925, at Geisinger, the daughter of the late Warren and Nelle (Dauberman) Murphy.

She was a 1943 graduate of Shamokin High School and became the historian of the Shamokin Alumni for many years.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shamokin. Helen Jane sang in the church choir for 66 years, starting at the age of 14. She also was the secretary of the Presbyterian Women United, for which she helped to organize a combined dinner meeting and program in the spring of each year.

Helen Jane was the first woman elected to serve as superintendent; she also taught Sunday School for both the Primary Department and the Kindergarten Department. She was also on the Pep Club and an elder.

She sang with the Choraliers many years.

Her first job was Rea and Derrick for 18 years. Leaving there, she worked for 25 years for the unemployment office, where she retired. She also drove for Meals on Wheels for some time.

She loved taking her mother on bus trips and also going on cruises. After her mother passed, she still took trips with friends. She traveled to Hawaii, the British Isles, all the Caribbean islands, Cape Cod, Alaska and Canada.

She was a B Member of the Independence Fire Co., Shamokin, and she loved going there for lunch, especially on Fridays for their macaroni and cheese, haddock with stewed tomatoes and her ice tea.

Special thanks to Dr. Miller and all the nursing staff who took care of Helen Jane at Serenity Gardens and Geisinger-Shamokin Hospital, and also Advantage Hospice.

I would like to write one last thing about Helen Jane. She was my best friend and I am glad I got to know her over the years. I will miss you always, but I have our memories of our time together. I'll never forget. I love you always, your guardian angel.

Helen Jane Murphy is survived by numerous cousins.

MURPHY - Helen Jane Murphy, 95, formerly of 226 E. Dewart St., Shamokin. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 826 N. Liberty St, Shamokin, PA 17872. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be observed. Burial will follow at the St. Peter’s Blue Church Cemetery, Paxinos.
